Events
Clean Up Australia co-ordinates two flagship events Clean Up Australia Day and the Clean Up the World campaign.
Clean Up Australia Day, held every 1st Sunday in March has grown to be Australia’s largest community-based environment campaign and now includes – Business Clean Up Day and Schools Clean Up Day as well as the traditional Clean Up Australia Day. Born as a result of Founder and Chairman’s Ian Kiernan AO’s desire to clean up his beloved Sydney Harbour, this national activity annually attracts the support of over 800,000 volunteers who have, over the last 20 years, successfully removed more than 220,000 tonnes of rubbish.
Clean Up Australia’s global outreach program, Clean Up the World, is a year round community based environmental action campaign. Supported by the United Nations Environment Program since inception, Clean Up the World has grown to include participation from over 120 countries involving more than 35 million volunteers. Although the clean up projects are implemented throughout the year, the Clean Up the World program culminates in a weekend ofcelebration and a joint clean up that is held on the third weekend of September. Over the last 16 years Clean Up the World has successfully implemented a myriad of projects and programs that have greatly assisted in cleaning up, fixing up and conserving the global environment.
Projects
Drawing on the relationships made via Clean Up Australia Day, Fix Up Projects are an ongoing environmental partnership between the community, local government and industry to repair and remediate our environment.
Since the launch of ‘Clean Up to Fix Up’ in the mid 1990s more than 80 community-based projects have
been assisted by Clean Up Australia. Our support includes information, management, facilitation of
funding, promotional help, contact sharing, endorsement and advice.
Projects have included major initiatives such as Lord Howe Island’s waste management strategy, treatment of Taronga Zoo’s wastewater, the remediation of Parsley Bay, Richmond’s water reuse
initiative and the Moonee Ponds Creek Stormwater Litter Project in Victoria.
Local community led Fix Up projects supported by Clean Up Australia include ‘Carpbusters’ - a carp reduction and native fish regeneration program in Queensland, remediation of Mermaids Pool in
Manly, NSW and the Derwent River and Coastal Clean Up, Hobart, Tasmania.
Through community education campaigns such as Bag Yourself a Better Environment, which aims to
change retailer and consumer attitudes and actions to the use of plastic bags, and Leave Only Footprints, a beach litter reduction education campaign, Clean Up Australia continues to foster and support community led environmental reform.
Community Action
Clean Up the Kimberley attracts more than 2000 local residents, tourists and indigenous communities who band together to clean up sites around major tourist hot-spots. In partnership with local teachers we adapted our Schools Kit to reflect local conditions in the region; we encouraged indigenous community
stores to Say NO to plastic bags and surveyed tourists on better ways to manage their waste
while in transit. Clean Up the Barwon River, a partnership with Parks Victoria worked with local community groups, businesses and schools to increase awareness and action along the banks of the
Barwon. A series of educational seminars and events attracted thousands of local participants to take ownership of the areas.
Clean Up Our Climate
Communities and business are fast becoming more aware of climate change and how our actions impact upon the planet. Far from being something ‘too hard' or ‘hopeless', the solutions for the future is in our hands. Under the banner of Clean Up Our Climate, Clean Up does what it does best, presenting practical solutions which are easy, fun and anyone can do.
The Clean Up Our Climate campaign brings these actions together to empower people to make a practical change in their homes, workplace, lifestyle and community.
We do this by showcasing innovative technology and product solutions that truly help clean up our
climate.
